Abdul Samad Penkar

Honorary Volleyball Coach & Mentor

Volunteer coach (1983–2006); beloved Virbaijeeite

BVS Volleyball Icon Led teams to 21 straight finals and 18 inter-school titles.
Player to Coach Represented N.E.D., Karachi University, Karachi, and national tournaments before mentoring at B.V.S.
Selfless Service Coached 23 years without pay; funded uniforms, nets, balls, transport, and refreshments.

If any sport is synonymous with B.V.S., it is volleyball. With a dedicated court and a passionate coach, the school’s team flourished under Sir Samad Penkar. As a student, Samad loved the sport and continued excelling at D.J. College and N.E.D. University, where he played for the volleyball team while completing his B.E. (Civil Engineering). He led Karachi University in inter-varsity tournaments, represented Karachi in national championships and games, and served as gymkhana secretary at N.E.D. He also held roles in the Karachi Volleyball Association and the Sind Volleyball Federation.

In 1983 he returned to his alma mater to seek admission for his son, Moiz. After Principal Mrs. Deena Mistri insisted on the standard entrance exam, Moiz earned his place. Samad began visiting teachers and reconnected with PT instructor Mr. Qurban Ali, who asked him to coach the volleyball team. Mrs. Mistri approved, and Samad became a volunteer coach.

For 23 years he served without accepting a single rupee. Under his guidance the team shattered records:

  • 21 consecutive finals in the Directorate of School Education inter-school tournament.
  • 18 championships in that tournament, including 10 straight titles.
  • 5 championships out of 6 years in the Board of Secondary Education tournament.
  • Unbeaten champions for four consecutive years in the Garden Club tournament.
  • Only school to hold all three titles simultaneously for years.

Many seasons featured multiple B.V.S. boys on Karachi Secondary Board teams; once, eleven of twelve players were Virbaijeeites led by Faredon Arjani.

Beyond coaching, Samad paid for uniforms, nets, balls, transport, and post-match refreshments. He supported annual sports and school activities, showing the kind of dedication few display in any era. The alumni offer heartfelt thanks for his love, guidance, and for making champions out of every boy he coached.

Samad retired from honorary service on January 30, 2006. His legacy of 23 years of service, humility, and excellence is hard to match — all eyes right for Sir Samad Penkar.

Words from Sir Samad

Thank you for honoring me on the Alumni site. I would like to mention here, the exceptional support and help that I got from the then Principal Mrs. Deena Mistri, “our Deenu Aunty”. Her guidance and blessings were always a source of inspiration for me and my boys, during all these years. On behalf of the teams that played during these 23 years and me, I would like to dedicate our achievements to our beloved Deenu Aunty.

While accepting this honour on our Alumni site, I have gone through tremendous emotional feelings, especially when recalling the pleasures and satisfaction of those successful moments, when we used to bring championship trophies and gold medals for the school. I must admit, I have thoroughly enjoyed doing all of this for my school, staff and my dear boys. I wish my Alma Mater the best and all the success in the future.
